 Warm-up Questions
  1. What challenges do animals face during hot summers?

  2. How does melting ice affect polar bears’ hunting?

  3. Why do humans have a responsibility to protect wildlife?

Vocabulary

  1. Polar bear (n.) 北極熊 [ˈpoʊ.lɚ beər]
A large bear that lives mainly in the Arctic and hunts seals for food.
Example: The polar bear struggles to find food as the ice melts.

  2. Mud (n.) 泥土 [mʌd]
    Soft, wet earth.
Example: After the rain, the cubs played in the thick mud.

The quality of being hot or very warm.
Example: The Arctic heat is unusual but dangerous for polar bears.

  4. Hunt (v.) 捕獵 [hʌnt]
To chase and kill animals for food.
Example: Without ice, polar bears cannot hunt seals efficiently.

  5. Exhausted (adj.) 疲憊的 [ɪɡˈzɔːs.tɪd]
    Very tired or worn out.
Example: The mother bear looked exhausted after searching for food.

  6. Human activity (n.) 人類活動 [ˈhjuː.mən ækˈtɪv.ə.ti]
Actions done by humans that can affect the environment.
Example: Human activity has accelerated climate change in the Arctic.

Conversation

A: Look at the polar bear lying on the mud. Why is it so exhausted?

B: The heat is extreme, and it cannot hunt for seals easily.

A: Do humans have an effect on polar bears?

B: Yes. Human activity like pollution and global warming melts the ice.

A: What can we do to help these animals?

B: We should protect their habitats and reduce harmful human activity.

Short Article

Polar bears usually live on sea ice and hunt seals for food. However, rising global temperatures cause extreme heat, and the ice is disappearing. Many polar bears lie on mud or rocky land, trying to rest and recover energy. Some mothers look exhausted while caring for their cubs. Human activity, such as industrial emissions, is a major cause of these changes. Without ice, polar bears cannot hunt efficiently and face serious survival challenges. Images of bears struggling on land remind us that we must act to protect wildlife and reduce the negative effects of climate change.

Discussion
  1. How does extreme heat affect polar bears’ ability to hunt and survive?

  2. In what ways can human activity be changed to reduce harm to wildlife?

  3. How does seeing exhausted animals in mud or on land make you feel, and why should it matter?
